An airborne computer is linked to a ground-based or satellite-based
supplier of weather data that is geographically referenced. The computer
retrieves the weather data on a regular cycle but does not display the
data. The computer also has access to the aircraft's state, i.e.,
position, altitude, speed, and intended route. Algorithms within the
computer combine the present and estimated future positions of the
aircraft with the weather data, and create an alert to the crew if a
threat is detected. When a threat is detected, the weather display is
activated to draw the attention of the crew to the threat.
