A method is provided for estimating the size of a computer network such as
the Internet. A computer generates a random sample of potential network
addresses and then determines whether those sample addresses are currently
allocated to computers on the network. Using samples taken at multiple
points in time, the computer statistically models the growth of the
network. The model has unknown parameters, and values of the parameters
are estimated using previously sampled data. Using the estimated parameter
values in the model, the computer estimates the number of computers on the
network at historical points in time. The computer also uses the model to
forecast the number of computers on the network at future points in time.
Un metodo รจ fornito per la valutazione del formato di una rete di calcolatore quale il Internet. Un calcolatore genera un campione scelto a caso degli indirizzi di rete potenziali ed allora determina se quegli indirizzi del campione attualmente siano assegnati ai calcolatori sulla rete. Usando i campioni prelevati ai punti multipli a tempo, il calcolatore modella statisticamente lo sviluppo della rete. Il modello ha parametri sconosciuti ed i valori dei parametri sono valutati usando i dati precedentemente provati. Usando i valori di parametro valutati nel modello, il calcolatore valuta il numero di calcolatori sulla rete ai punti storici a tempo. Il calcolatore inoltre usa il modello per prevedere il numero di calcolatori sulla rete ai punti futuri a tempo.
