A compound selected from the group consisting of a
5,6-dihydro-.alpha.-pyrone of formula (I):

wherein bond a is oriented either {character pullout} or {character
pullout};
X is O or NH;
R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of:
a group R.sup.3 (O)C-- wherein R.sup.3 is selected from the group
consisting of: (i) a group of formula R.sup.4 --CH.dbd.CH-- wherein
R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkenyl, an aryl
group,
or a 5- or 6-membered unsaturated heterocyclic ring containing one or two
O, N or S atoms, (ii) C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkyl;
and (iii) an aryl group or a substituent which is a fused ring system of
formula (1) or (2):

wherein each of R' and R", which are the same or different and may occupy
any position on ring a or ring b of said fused ring system, is H or
C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl;
a group ArCH.sub.2 -- wherein Ar is an aryl group; and
a group R.sup.5 O--CH.sub.2 -- wherein R.sup.5 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl
optionally interrupted by one or two O atoms; and
R.sup.2 is CH.sub.3 or, when R.sup.1 is a group of formula (A) as defined
below, R.sup.2 is R.sup.6 OOC-- or R.sup.6 NOC-- wherein R.sup.6 is
C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl;
and the pharmaceutically and veterinarily acceptable salts and esters
thereof; with the exception of compounds wherein bond a is oriented
{character pullout},
X is O and R.sup.1 is a group of formula (A):

wherein R.sup.11 and R.sup.21 are H when R.sup.2 in formula (I) is
CO.sub.2 H or CH.sub.3, or one of R.sup.11 and R.sup.21 is H and the other
is OH when R.sup.2 in formula (I) is CO.sub.2 H.
Um composto selecionado do grupo que consiste em um 5,6-dihydro-.alpha.-pyrone da fórmula (i): ## do ## STR1 wherein a ligação a é orientada qualquer um {pullout do caráter} ou {pullout do caráter}; X são O ou NH; R.sup.1 é selecionado de consistir do grupo: um grupo R.sup.3 (O)C -- wherein R.sup.3 é selecionado de consistir do grupo: (i) um o grupo da fórmula R.sup.4 -- CH.dbd.CH -- wherein R.sup.4 é C.sub.1 - C.sub.20 alkyl, C.sub.2 - o alkenyl C.sub.20, um grupo aryl, ou uns 5- ou um anel 6-membered heterocyclic unsaturated que contêm um ou dois O, átomos de N ou de S, (ii) C.sub.2 - alkyl C.sub.20; e (iii) um o grupo aryl ou um substituent que seja um sistema fundido do anel da fórmula (1) ou (2): ## do ## STR2 wherein cada um de R ' e de R ", que são os mesmos ou diferentes e podem ocupar toda a posição no anel a ou no anel b de sistema fundido dito do anel, é H ou C.sub.1 - alkyl C.sub.6; um grupo ArCH.sub.2 -- wherein Ar é um grupo aryl; e um grupo R.sup.5 O -- CH.sub.2 -- wherein R.sup.5 é C.sub.1 - alkyl C.sub.6 interrompido opcionalmente por um ou dois átomos de O; e R.sup.2 é CH.sub.3 ou, quando R.sup.1 é um grupo da fórmula (A) como definido abaixo, R.sup.2 é R.sup.6 OOC -- ou NOC R.sup.6 -- wherein R.sup.6 é C.sub.1 - alkyl C.sub.6; e sais e esters pharmaceutically e veterinarily aceitáveis disso; à excecpção dos compostos wherein a ligação a é orientada {pullout do caráter}, X é O e R.sup.1 é um grupo da fórmula (a): ## do ## STR3 wherein R.sup.11 e R.sup.21 são H quando R.sup.2 na fórmula (I) é CO.sub.2 H ou CH.sub.3, ou um de R.sup.11 e de R.sup.21 são H e o outro é OH quando R.sup.2 na fórmula (I) é CO.sub.2 H.
