Azo dyes of Formula (1) have utility as dyes for ink-jet printing where
Formula (1) represents:

which comprises any suitable form of the compound: such as salt;
stereoisomer, zwitterion, polymorph, complex, isotopic form, combinations
thereof in the same species and mixtures thereof; where:
p represents from 1 to 7 inclusive;
the napthyl moiety may be optionally substituted;
R.sup.1 comprises at least one of the following substituents, optionally
substituted:
H, C.sub.1-4 -alkyl, NHCOC.sub.1-4 alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, NHCOaryl,
NHSO.sub.2 C.sub.1-4 alkyl, NHSO.sub.2 aryl,
NHCONR.sup.3 R.sup.4 where R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each independently comprises
H, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or aryl;
R.sup.2 comprises H, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy;
L.sup.1 and L.sup.2 each independently comprises at least one of the
following substituents, optionally substituted:
--NH.sub.2, --NHC.sub.1-4 alkyleneOH, --SC.sub.1-4 alkylene --SO.sub.3 H,
--NHC.sub.1-4 alkyleneN(C.sub.1-4 alkyl).sub.2, --N(C.sub.1-4
alkyleneOH).sub.2, --NHC.sub.1-4 alkyleneSO.sub.3 H, --NHC.sub.1-4
alkylene(CO.sub.2 H).sub.n where n is 1, 2 or 3, --SC.sub.1-4
alkylene(CO.sub.2 H).sub.m where m is 1, 2 or 3,
a moiety of Formula (2):

X represents NHC.sub.1-4 alkylene or a direct link and Y represents O or
NH;
amoiety of Formula (3):

where:
q represents from 1 to 7 inclusive;
the napthyl moiety may be optionally substituted; and
R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 each independently comprises at least one of the
following substituents, optionally substituted: H, C.sub.1-4 -alkyl,
NHCOC.sub.1-4 alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, NHCOaryl, NHSO.sub.2 C.sub.1-4
alkyl, NHSO.sub.2 aryl and NHCONR.sup.7 R.sup.8 where R.sup.7 and R.sup.8
each independently comprises H, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, aryl; and
any other suitable labile or non-labile substituent not mentioned above;
where the optional substituents herein comprise: C.sub.1-4 alkyl
(optionally substituted with at least one halo), C.sub.1-4 alkoxy
(optionally substituted with at least one halo), carboxy, sulpho, hydroxy,
amino, mercapto, cyano, nitro and halo.
