A novel pesticidal metabolite-producing B. mycoides strain is provided. In addition, a supernatant of the novel strain with pesticidal activity is provided. A water-soluble, small molecular weight (<10,000 daltons) metabolite produced by the novel strain of Bacillus mycoides with pesticidal activity against corn rootworm is provided. Also included are methods for protecting or treating plants from insect infestations comprising the step of applying to the plant an effective amount of the novel Bacillus mycoides strain, the metabolite produced by the novel strain or a combination thereof, optionally, further comprising applying another pesticidal metabolite-producing bacterial strain and/or a chemical pesticide.
