Disclosed is a method for monitoring the degradation of methyl tert-butyl ether in a contaminated media which contains methyl tert-butyl ether and/or which is treated under conditions which cause the degradation of methyl tert-butyl ether into 2-hydroxy isobutyric acid comprising: (A) evaluating the treated contaminated media to determine the absence or presence therein of 2-hydroxy isobutyric acid; (B) based on such evaluation, determining whether the conditions should be modified; and (C) modifying such conditions as may be necessary. Disclosed also is a method for degrading an ether comprising contacting the ether with a microorganism that is effective in oxidizing propane or isopropanol and 2-hydroxy-isobutyric acid.

Se divulga un método para supervisar la degradación del éter tert-buti'lico metílico en los medios contaminados que contiene el éter tert-buti'lico metílico y/o que se trata bajo condiciones que causen la degradación del éter tert-buti'lico metílico en abarcar isobutírico del ácido 2-hydroxy: (a) evaluando los medios contaminados tratados para determinar la ausencia o la presencia en esto del ácido isobutírico 2-hydroxy; (b) basado en tal evaluación, determinándose si las condiciones deben ser modificadas; y (c) modificando las condiciones tales como puede ser necesario. Se divulga también un método para degradar un éter que abarca entrando en contacto con el éter con un microorganismo que sea eficaz en propano o isopropanol y el ácido que oxidan 2-hydroxy-isobutyric.
