Impulse Control Disorders (ICD's) are characterized by harmful behaviors performed in response to irresistible impulses. The essential feature of an ICD is the failure to resist an impulse, drive, or temptation and to perform an act that is harmful to the person or to others. The present invention comprises methods for the treatment or prevention of ICD's using a class of sulfamates of the following formula: ##STR1## wherein X is CH.sub.2 or oxygen, and R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are as herein defined. Further, pharmaceutical compositions containing a compound of formula (I) as well as methods for their use and intermediates form part of the present invention are also disclosed.

Los desórdenes del control del impulso (ICD's) son caracterizados por los comportamientos dañosos realizados en respuesta a impulsos irrestibles. La característica esencial de un ICD es la falta de resistir un impulso, una impulsión, o una tentación y de realizar un acto que sea dañoso a la persona o a otros. La actual invención abarca los métodos para el tratamiento o la prevención de ICD's usando una clase de sulfamates del fórmula siguiente: ## del ## STR1 en donde X es CH.sub.2 u oxígeno, y R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 y R.sub.5 están según lo adjunto definido. Además, las composiciones farmacéuticas que contienen un compuesto del fórmula (i) tan bien como los métodos para su uso e intermedios forman la parte de la actual invención también se divulgan.
