An alkylaryl composition wherein the aryl radical is other than phenol and wherein the alkyl radical is derived from an isomerized C.sub.14 to C.sub.40 normal alpha olefin and wherein either (1) the weight percent of the aryl radical fixed at position 1 or 2 of a linear alkyl chain is less than about 23, or (2) at least 28 weight percent of the alkyl radicals are branched chain alkyl radicals, or (3) both is useful for making alkaline earth alkylaryl sulfonates that can be used as lubricating oil additives.

Une composition en alkylaryl où le radical arylique est autre que le phénol et où le radical alkylique est dérivé d'un C.sub.14 isomérisé à l'oléfine normale de l'alpha C.sub.40 et où (1) le pour cent de poids du radical arylique fixé à la position 1 ou 2 d'une chaîne alkylique linéaire est moins qu'environ 23, ou (2) au moins les pour cent de 28 poids des radicaux alkyliques sont les radicaux alkyliques à chaînes embranchés, ou (3) toutes les deux est utile pour préparer les sulfonates d'alkylaryl de terre alcaline qui peuvent être employés en tant qu'additifs d'huile de graissage.
