The present invention relates to compounds of Formula (I) below, which
inhibit the growth of picornaviruses, Hepatitus viruses, enteroviruses,
cardioviruses, polioviruses, coxsackieviruses of the A and B groups, echo
virus and Mengo virus.

A is phenyl, pyridyl, substituted phenyl, substituted pyridyl, or benzyl;
R is hydrogen, COR.sup.4, or COCF.sub.3 ;
X is N--OH, O, or CHR.sup.1 ;
R.sup.1 is hydrogen, halo, CN, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, --C.ident.CH,
CO(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl), CO.sub.2 (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl), or
CONR.sup.2 R.sup.3 ;
R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl;
A' is hydrogen, halo, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, benzyl, naphthyl, thienyl,
furyl, pyridyl, pyrollyl, COR.sup.4, S(O).sub.n R.sup.4, or a group of the
formula

R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, phenyl, or substituted phenyl;
n is 0, 1, or 2;
R.sup.5 is independently at each occurrence hydrogen or halo;
m is 1, 2, 3, or 4; and
R.sup.6 is hydrogen, halo, CF.sub.3, OH, CO.sub.2 H, NH.sub.2, NO.sub.2,
CONHOCH.sub.3, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, or CO.sub.2 (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4
alkyl), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy;
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
