Described is a 4-hydroxy-4-phenylpiperidine derivative represented by the following formula (1): ##STR1## [wherein, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and each independently represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl, or the like, R.sup.3 represents a hydrogen atom or a group --(CR.sup.4 R.sup.5).sub.n --Y (in which, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 each represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, Y represents a group --COOR.sup.6, --CONR.sup.7 R.sup.8, --OR.sup.9 or --OCOR.sup.10 (in which R.sup.6, R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 each independently represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, or the like, R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 are the same or different and each independently represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, or the like), and n stands for 1 to 6)], or salt thereof. The compound exhibits excellent peripheral analgesic action.
