The present invention relates to a method for the preparation of citalopram
or any of its enantiomers and acid addition salts thereof comprising
treatment of a compound of formula (IV), wherein X is O or S; R.sup.1
-R.sup.2 are each independently selected from hydrogen and C.sub.1-6
alkyl, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together form a C.sub.2-5 alkylene chain
thereby forming a spiro-ring; R.sup.3 is selected from hydrogen and
C.sub.1-6 alkyl, R.sup.4 is selected from hydrogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl, a
carboxy group or a precursor group therefore, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4
together form a C.sub.2-5 alkylene chain thereby forming a spiro-ring,
with a dehydration agent or alternatively where X is S, thermally cleavage
of the thiazoline ring, or treatment in presence of a radical initiator,
to form citalopram. The invention also relates to intermediates used in
the new process for the preparation of citalopram, as well as citalopram
prepared according to the new process.

De onderhavige uitvinding heeft op een methode voor de voorbereiding van citalopram of om het even welk van zijn enantiomers en zure toevoegingszouten daarvan betrekking bestaand uit behandeling van een samenstelling van formule (IV), waarin X O of S is; R.sup.1 - R.sup.2 elk worden onafhankelijk geselecteerd uit waterstof en alkyl c.sub.1-6, of R.sup.1 en R.sup.2 vormen samen een alkylene c.sub.2-5 ketting daardoor vormt een spiro-ring; R.sup.3 wordt geselecteerd uit waterstof en alkyl c.sub.1-6, wordt R.sup.4 geselecteerd uit waterstof, alkyl c.sub.1-6, een carboxygroep of een voorlopergroep daarom, of R.sup.3 en R.sup.4 vormen samen een alkylene c.sub.2-5 ketting daardoor vormt een spiro-ring, met een dehydratieagent of alternatief waar X S, thermaal splijten van de thiazolinering, of behandeling in aanwezigheid van een radicale initiatiefnemer, aan vorm citalopram is. De uitvinding heeft ook op tussenpersonen betrekking die in het nieuwe proces voor de voorbereiding van citalopram worden gebruikt, evenals citalopram die volgens het nieuwe proces worden voorbereid. ## STR1 ##
