Described are compounds of the general formula A

R.sub.2 =CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5, C.sub.3 H.sub.7 (n, iso) or C.sub.4
H.sub.9 (n, iso, tert)
which are especially useful as fragrance or flavor materials. The
3-mercapto-2-alkyl-alkanals of the general formula A in which X--CHO are
formed by reaction of the corresponding 2-alkyl-2-alkenals with hydrogen
sulfide.
Mittel des allgemeinen Formel A ## STR1 ## in dem ## STR2 ## R.sub.2 = CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5, C.sub.3 H.sub.7 (n, ISO) oder C.sub.4 H.sub.9 (n, ISO, tert) und R.sub.2 = CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5, C.sub.3 H.sub.7 (n, ISO) oder C.sub.4 H.sub.9 beschrieben (n, ISO, tert) die als Duft oder Aromamaterialien besonders nützlich sind. Das 3-mercapto-2-alkyl-alkanals in der der allgemeinen Formel A X -- cho werden durch Reaktion des entsprechenden 2-alkyl-2-alkenals mit Wasserstoffsulfid gebildet.
