Linear backbone phosphorus-boron polymers of the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4, are the same or different and selected from H, optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl and phenyl; and n is at least 2, and particularly high molecular weight polymers of absolute weight average molecular weight of at least 10,000. The polymers are of use as fire retardants.
