This invention is directed to sorbitol dehydrogenase inhibitory compounds of the formula I, ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are as defined in the specification. This invention is also directed to pharmaceutical compositions containing those compounds and methods of treating or preventing diabetic complications, particularly diabetic neuropathy, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic microangiopathy, diabetic macroangiopathy and diabetic cardiomyopathy by administering such compounds to a mammal suffering from diabetes and therefore at risk for developing such complications. This invention is also directed to pharmaceutical compositions comprising a combination of a compound of formula I of this invention with an aldose reductase inhibitor and to methods of treating or preventing diabetic complications therewith. This invention is also directed to pharmaceutical compositions comprising a combination of a compound of formula I of this invention with an NHE-1 inhibitor and to methods of treating cardiomyopathy and other heart-related problems therewith. This invention is also directed to certain intermediates used in the synthesis of the compounds of formula I and to processes for preparing those intermediates.

Esta invenção é dirigida aos compostos inhibitory do dehydrogenase do sorbitol da fórmula I, ## do ## STR1 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 e R.sup.3 são como definidos na especificação. Esta invenção é dirigida também às composições pharmaceutical que contêm aqueles compostos e métodos de tratar ou de impedir complicações diabetic, particularmente neuropathy diabetic, nephropathy diabetic, cardiomyopathy macroangiopathy e diabetic microangiopathy, diabetic diabetic administrando tais compostos a um mamífero que sofre do diabetes e conseqüentemente no risco para desenvolver tais complicações. Esta invenção é dirigida também às composições pharmaceutical que compreendem uma combinação de um composto da fórmula I desta invenção com um inibidor do reductase do aldose e aos métodos de tratar ou de impedir complicações diabetic therewith. Esta invenção é dirigida também às composições pharmaceutical que compreendem uma combinação de um composto da fórmula I desta invenção com um inibidor NHE-1 e aos métodos de tratar o cardiomyopathy e outros problemas coração-relacionados therewith. Esta invenção é dirigida também a determinados intermediários usados na síntese dos compostos da fórmula I e aos processos preparando aqueles intermediários.
