An authentication device consists of a hand-held unit having a receptacle for a smart card and an audio interface for communication with a telephone line. A challenge-and-response authentication procedure is performed between the smart card and a remote service. The device is dedicated solely to said authentication procedure and has no display.

Un dispositif d'authentification se compose d'une unité tenue dans la main ayant un réceptacle pour une carte futée et une interface audio pour la communication avec une ligne téléphonique. Un procédé d'authentification de défier-et-réponse est exécuté entre la carte futée et un service à distance. Le dispositif est consacré seulement à ledit procédé d'authentification et n'a aucun affichage.
