There is provided a method of contraception, comprising exposing a spermicidally sufficient quantity of an agent to spermatozoa. The agent is a quinone represented by the following formula: ##STR1## Each group A is H or an electron releasing moiety. The agent is capable of generating reactive oxygen species including free radicals, superoxide and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of spermatozoa.
