The present invention relates to an agent for preventing and treating skin diseases comprising as an active ingredient an ascorbic acid derivative which is a compound represented by the following formula (1) or a salt thereof and which per se exhibits no anti-oxidation activity but is capable of transforming in vivo into a compound having an anti-oxidation activity; ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a group capable of bonding to the carbon at the 2-position of the ascorbic acid skeleton through an ether or ester bond and transformable in vivo into a hydroxyl group, and R.sup.2 to R.sup.4 may be the same or different and each represents a hydroxyl group or a group derived therefrom.
