The invention provides low viscosity iodinated aryl compounds, useful as X-ray contrast agents of formula I ##STR1## wherein n is 0 or 1, and where n is 1 each C.sub.6 R.sub.5 moiety may be the same or different; X denotes a bond or a group providing a 1 to 7 atom chain linking two C.sub.6 R.sub.5 moieties or, where n is 0, X denotes a group R; each group R is a hydrogen atom, an iodine atom or a hydrophilic moiety M or M.sub.1, two or three non-adjacent R groups in each C.sub.6 R.sub.5 moiety being iodine and at least one R group in each C.sub.6 R.sub.5 moiety being an M or M.sub.1 moiety; each M which may be the same or different, is a non-ionic hydrophilic moiety; and each M.sub.1 independently represents a --CHOHCON(R.sub.1).sub.2 group wherein each R.sub.1, which may be the same or different, is a hydrogen atom, an OH group or a C.sub.1-6 alkoxy or optionally hydroxylated C.sub.1-5 alkyl group; at least one R group in the molecule being an M.sub.1 moiety; and isomers thereof.

De uitvinding verstrekt lage viscositeits iodinated aryl samenstellingen, nuttig als X-ray contrastagenten van formule I ## STR1 ## waarin n 0 of 1 is, en waar n is kan 1 elk deel C.sub.6 R.sub.5 zelfde of verschillend zijn; X duidt een band aan of een groep die een 1 tot 7 atoomketting verstrekt die twee delen C.sub.6 R.sub.5 of, waar n 0 is verbindt, X duidt een groep R aan; elke groep R is een waterstofatoom, een jodiumatoom of een hydrofiel deel M of M.sub.1, twee of drie niet-adjacent de groepen van R in elk deel C.sub.6 die R.sub.5 jodium en minstens één groep van R in elk deel C.sub.6 die R.sub.5 een deel M of M.sub.1 is is; elk M dat zelfde of verschillend kan zijn, is een niet-ionisch hydrofiel deel; en elke M.sub.1 vertegenwoordigt onafhankelijk a -- groep CHOHCON(R.sub.1).sub.2 waarin elke R.sub.1, die zelfde of verschillend kan zijn, een waterstofatoom is, een OH groep of alkoxy c.sub.1-6 of naar keuze hydroxylated alkyl groep c.sub.1-5; minstens één groep van R in de molecule die een deel M.sub.1 is; en isomeren daarvan.
