An irregularly etched metallic medical implant device is provided having random non-uniform relief patterns on the surface ranging from about 0.3 .mu.m to less than about 20 .mu.m in depth. The random, irregular surface as defined by the etch micromorphology and respective dimensional properties is sobtained by exposing a surface to a reactive plasma in a chamber wherein said reactive plasma produces a reaction product with the surface to thereby etch the surface, said reaction product or a complex thereof having a vapor pressure lower than a pressure in the chamber; providing a dynamic masking agent during the etching process; and removing the reaction products.

Un dispositif médical métallique irrégulièrement gravé à l'eau-forte d'implant est fourni en ayant les modèles en relief non-uniformes aléatoires sur la surface s'étendant d'environ 0.3 mu.m moins qu'au mu.m environ 20 détaillé. La surface aléatoire et irrégulière comme définie par la micromorphologie et les propriétés dimensionnelles respectives gravure à l'eau forte est sobtained en exposant une surface à un plasma réactif dans une chambre où ledit plasma réactif produit un produit de réaction avec la surface pour graver à l'eau-forte de ce fait la surface, ledit produit de réaction ou un complexe ayant en une pression de vapeur plus bas qu'une pression dans la chambre ; fournir un agent masquant dynamique pendant le processus gravure à l'eau-forte ; et enlevant les produits de réaction.
