A hydrophobically capped oligomeric acrylamide or pyrrolidone is employed as a coating aid in coating compositions, especially such compositions useful in the manufacture of photographic products. Preferred coating aids are surfactants having the general formula ##STR1## in which R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently selected from aliphatic hydrocarbyl, aryl-(aliphatic hydrocarbyl) and (aliphatic hydrocarbyl)-aryl groups, which groups may be unsubstituted, partially fluorinated or fully fluorinated, L is a sulphur atom or a linking group that contains a sulphur atom attached to the T group and T is a hydrophilic oligomeric group obtainable by the oligomerisation of one or more vinyl monomers having an amido function.

Hydrophobically afgedekte oligomeric acrylamide of pyrrolidone zijn aangewend als deklaaghulp in deklaagsamenstellingen, vooral dergelijke samenstellingen nuttig in de vervaardiging van fotografische producten. De voorkeur gehad met een laag bedekkend hulp zijn capillair-actieve stoffen die de algemene formule ## STR1 ## hebben waarin R, R.sup.1 en R.sup.2 elk onafhankelijk uit alifatische hydrocarbyl, aryl-(aliphatic hydrocarbyl) worden geselecteerd en (de alifatische hydrocarbyl)-aryl groepen, die zich groepeert kunnen unsubstituted, gedeeltelijk fluorinated of volledig fluorinated zijn, is L een zwavelatoom of een aaneenschakelingsgroep die een zwavelatoom in bijlage aan de groep bevat van T en T een hydrofiele oligomeric groep verkrijgbaar door oligomerisation van één of meerdere vinylmonomeren die een amido functie hebben is.
