Pigment dispersants comprise compounds represented by the following formula (I) or (II) or metal, ammonium or amine salts thereof: ##STR1## wherein X.sub.1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl or acylamino group, Y.sub.1 is an anthraquinonylamino, phenylamino, naphthyl-amino or phenoxy group, each of R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or phenyl group, R.sub.2 is a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene, phenylene or naphthylene group, X.sub.2 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, R.sub.4 is a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl or naphthyl group, and n means an average number of sulfonic acid groups introduced in said compound and stands for a number of from 0.5 to 2. Pigment compositions, such as colorants for gravure inks, paints or color filters, comprise pigments and the pigment dispersants.
