A process is provided for the production of hydrogen from hydrogen sulfide by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen sulfide to produce hydrogen and carbonyl sulfide, and then reacting the carbonyl sulfide with oxygen to produce carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide. The carbon monoxide is recycled back to the hydrogen sulfide reaction step. The catalyst used to promote the reaction between carbonyl sulfide and oxygen is an oxide of a metal, such as V, Nb, Mo, Cr, Re, Ti, W, Mn or Ta, which is supported on a support, such as TiO.sub.2, ZrO.sub.2, CeO.sub.2, Nb.sub.2 O.sub.5 and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.

Ein Prozeß wird für die Produktion des Wasserstoffs vom Wasserstoffsulfid vom Reagieren des Kohlenmonoxids mit Wasserstoffsulfid zum Erzeugniswasserstoff und zum Karbonylsulfid, und das Karbonylsulfid mit Sauerstoff zum Erzeugniskohlenmonoxid und zum Schwefeldioxid dann von reagieren zur Verfügung gestellt. Das Kohlenmonoxid wird zurück zu dem Wasserstoffsulfid-Reaktion Schritt aufbereitet. Der Katalysator, der benutzt wird, um die Reaktion zwischen Karbonylsulfid und Sauerstoff zu fördern, ist ein Oxid eines Metalls, wie V, Notiz:, MO, Cr, Re, Ti, W, Mangan oder Ta, die auf eine Unterstützung, wie TiO.sub.2, ZrO.sub.2, CeO.sub.2, Nb.sub.2 O.sub.5 und Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 gestützt wird.
