Phthalocyanine compounds of the formulas I and II: ##STR1## wherein X.sub.1-8 are each halogen and R.sub.1-8 are each independently halogen or an anti-stacking moiety; and [M.sub.x L.sub.y S.sub.z ]C.sub.w (II) wherein M is a metal, L is an anion of a phthalocyanine compound of formula I as defined above, S is an organic or inorganic ligand, C is a counterion, x and y are numbers greater than zero, and z and w are numbers zero or greater, are disclosed. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising the compounds and methods of using the compounds, for example for treatment of cancer, are also disclosed.

Phthalocyanine samenstellingen van formules I en II: ## STR1 ## waarin x.sub.1-8 elk halogeen zijn en r.sub.1-8 zijn elk onafhankelijk halogeen of een anti-stapelt deel; en [ M.sub.x L.sub.y S.sub.z ]C.sub.w (II) waarin M een metaal is, L is een anion van een phthalocyanine samenstelling van formule I zoals hierboven bepaald, is S een organische of anorganische ligand, is C een counterion, x en y zijn aantallen groter dan nul, en z en w zijn nummer nul of groter, worden onthuld.
