Water-soluble nonionic polyurethanes as protective colloids for the polymerization of olefinically unsaturated monomers in aqueous medium wherein the water-soluble nonionic polyurethanes have been prepared by reacting a) organic polyisocyanates with b) water-soluble polyalkylene glycols containing at least 70% by weight of ethylene glycol groups and with c) polyhydric branched alcohols containing at least three hydroxyl groups per molecule and wherein the equivalent ratio of b) to c) is in the range from 1:0.01 to 1:10 and the equivalent ratio of [b)+c)] to a) is in the range from 1:0.6 to 1:0.85.

Wasserlöslicher nichtionogener Polyurethan als schützende Kolloide für die Polymerisierung der olefinically ungesättigten Monomeren im wäßrigen Mittel, worin der wasserlösliche nichtionogene Polyurethan vorbereitet worden ist, indem man A) organische polyisocyanates mit B) den wasserlöslichen polyalkylene Glykolen reagierte, die 70% mindestens nach Gewicht Äthylenglykolgruppen enthalten und mit c) dem ausgebrittenen Polywasserstoffspiritus, der mindestens drei Hydroxylgruppen pro Molekül enthält und worin das gleichwertige Verhältnis von B) bis c) in der Strecke von 1:0.01 zu 1:10 ist und des gleichwertigen Verhältnisses von [ b)+c) ] zu A) ist in der Strecke von 1:0.6 bis 1:0.85.
