Primary intermediates useful hair coloring systems comprise quaternized pyrrolidine compounds. The invention provides new quaternized pyrrolidine of Formula (1): ##STR1## wherein X is Cl, Br, I, or R.sup.3 S0.sub.4 ; R is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.22 alkyl group or a C.sub.1 to C.sub.22 mono or dihydroxyalkyl group; R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently a C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl group; R.sup.3 is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.22 alkyl group or a C.sub.1 to C.sub.22 mono or dihydroxyalkyl group; R.sup.4 is a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 to C.sub.5 alkyl group or such an alkyl group substituted with one or more hydroxy or amino moieties; and R.sup.5 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy group.
