Peptido and peptidomimetic compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein the formula variables are as defined in the disclosure, advantageously inhibit or block the biological activity of the picornaviral 3C protease. These compounds, as well as pharmaceutical compositions containing these compounds, are useful for treating patients or hosts infected with one or more picornaviruses, such as RVP. Intermediates and synthetic methods for preparing such compounds are also provided.

Peptido e residui peptidomimetic della formula: ## del ## STR1 in cui le variabili di formula sono come definite nella rilevazione, vantaggiosamente inibisca o ostruisca l'attività biologica della proteasi picornaviral 3C. Questi residui, così come le composizioni farmaceutiche che contengono questi residui, sono utili per la cura i pazienti o degli ospiti infettati con uno o più picornaviruses, quale RVP. Gli intermediari ed i metodi sintetici per la preparazione dei tali residui inoltre sono forniti.
