This invention provides estrogen receptor modulators of formula 1, having the structure ##STR1## wherein X, Y.sup.1, Y.sup.2, Y.sup.3, Y.sup.4, Z.sup.1, Z.sup.2, Z.sup.3, and Z.sup.4 are as defined in the specification, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
