Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DP 4) inhibiting compounds are provided having the formula ##STR1## where n is 0 or 1; X is H or CN; Y is N, NH or O; Z is CH.sub.2 when Y is O or N--H, with Y--Z forming a single bond, and Z is CH when Y is N, with Y--Z forming a double bond; and wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are as described herein. A method is also provided for treating diabetes and related diseases, especially Type II diabetes, and other diseases as set out herein, employing such DP 4 inhibitor or a combination of such DP 4 inhibitor and one or more of another antidiabetic agent such as metformin, glyburide, troglitazone, pioglitazone, rosiglitazone and/or insulin and/or one or more of a hypolipidemic agent and/or anti-obesity agent and/or other therapeutic agent.

Peptidasi IV (residui d'inibizione di Dipeptidyl di DP 4) è fornito avendo il ## del ## STR1 di formula in cui la n è 0 o 1; X è H o CN; Y è N, il NH o O; La Z è CH.sub.2 quando Y è O o il NH, con Y--Z che forma un singolo legame e la Z è CH quando Y è N, con Y--Z che forma un legame doppio; ed in cui R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 e R.sup.4 sono come descritti qui. Un metodo inoltre è fornito per trattare il diabete e malattie riferite, particolarmente il tipo il diabete di II ed altre malattie come precisato qui, impiegando tale inibitore di DP 4 o una combinazione di tale inibitore di DP 4 ed uno o più di un altro agente antidiabetico quali il metformin, glyburide, troglitazone, pioglitazone, rosiglitazone e/o insulina e/o uno o più di un agente ipolipidico di anti-obesità e/o dell'agente e/o dell'altro agente terapeutico.
