A silver halide photographic element comprising a silver halide emulsion which is greater than 50 mole % silver chloride and a pyrimidine compound represented by Formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 are each independently a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy, alkoxy, amino, alkylamino, cyanoamino or alkyl group, and R.sub.4 is a hydroxy, alkoxy, amino, alkylamino, cyanoamino or alkyl group; provided that at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 is a hydroxy or an amino group.
