Novel antiviral (including antiretroviral) compounds are mono- or dicarboxylic acid esters of hypericin in which one or both of the methyl groups of hypericin are substituted by carboxylic acid ester groups of the formula COOR.sup.3 in which R.sup.3 is alkyl, the chain of which is optionally interrupted by one or more oxygen or sulphur atoms. R.sup.3 is preferably methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, 2-methoxyethyl or 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl. The compounds may be formulated into pharmaceutical compositions and may be used in any manner which has previously been known for hypericin.

Antiviren (einschließlich antiretroviral) Mittel des Romans sind Mono- oder dicarbonische saure Ester von hypericin, in denen eine oder beide der Methyl- Gruppen von hypericin durch Estergruppen der karboxylhaltigen Säure der Formel COOR.sup.3 ersetzt werden, in der R.sup.3 Alkyl ist, deren Kette beliebig durch einen oder mehr Sauerstoff oder Schwefelatome unterbrochen wird. R.sup.3 ist vorzugsweise Methyl-, Ethyl-, Propyl-, Butyl-, 2-methoxyethyl oder 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl. Die Mittel können in pharmazeutischen Aufbau formuliert werden und können in jeder möglicher Weise verwendet werden, die vorher für hypericin bekannt.
