This invention relates to the identification of a human complement C3
binding polypeptide and the nucleic acid which encodes the polypeptide
from Streptococcus agalactiae. The polypeptide binds C3 and may be
implicated in S. agalactiae adhesion and/or virulence. The polypeptide is
conserved in mass in a variety of streptococcal isolates and is recognized
by antibodies produced by humans exposed to or colonized with Group B
Streptococcus.
