A process for making alpha-HMX comprises the steps of: (a) combining phosphorus pentoxide and nitric acid at a temperature of about 0-25.degree. C., forming a reaction mixture; and (b) adding a compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is straight chain or branched alkyl having 1-5 carbon atoms, to the reaction mixture, whereby a product comprising alpha-HMX is produced.

Un procédé pour faire l'alpha-HMX comporte les étapes de : (a) combinaison du pentoxyde de phosphore et de l'acide nitrique à une température environ de 0-25.degree. C., formant un mélange de la réaction ; et (b) ajoutant un composé ayant la formule : ## du ## STR1 où R est chaîne droite ou alkyl embranché ayant 1-5 atomes de carbone, au mélange de la réaction, par lequel un produit comportant l'alpha-HMX soit produit.
