A fault tolerant CCS system has two similar peer systems, one being an active system and the other a standby system. Each peer system has a local application which runs therein and which has an access to a common database that is used for storing critical status and application information. Further, each peer system includes a protocol stack for handling the multiple dialogs comprising exchanges of messages between the application and a remote network element. The protocol stack is enhanced by a first function that allows the active application to request the protocol stack to provide the current status of a given dialog and by a second function that is issued by the standby application to re-initialize the standby protocol stack. The first function is used to regularly retrieve, for any dialog, the current state of its associated protocol stack state machine and to store the latter into the common database. Upon occurrence of a failure, the standby application can access the common database for retrieval of the current state data, as well as issue a command to re-initialize the standby protocol stack so that the ongoing dialog can resume.

Een fouten verdraagzaam systeem CCS heeft twee gelijkaardige peer systemen, één zijnd een actief systeem en andere een reservesysteem. Elk peer systeem heeft een lokale toepassing die de looppas en die daarin een toegang tot een gemeenschappelijk gegevensbestand heeft dat voor het opslaan van kritieke status en toepassingsinformatie wordt gebruikt. Verder, omvat elk peer systeem een protocolstapel voor de behandeling van de veelvoudige dialogen bestaand uit uitwisselingen van berichten tussen de toepassing en een ver netwerkelement. De protocolstapel wordt verbeterd door een eerste functie die de actieve toepassing toestaat om de protocolstapel te verzoeken om de huidige status van een bepaalde dialoog en door een tweede functie te verstrekken die door de reservetoepassing wordt uitgegeven om de reserveprotocolstapel re-te initialiseren. De eerste functie wordt gebruikt om, voor om het even welke dialoog, de huidige staat van zijn bijbehorende toestandsmachine van de protocolstapel regelmatig terug te winnen en de laatstgenoemden op te slaan in het gemeenschappelijke gegevensbestand. Op voorkomen van een mislukking, kan de reservetoepassing tot het gemeenschappelijke gegevensbestand voor herwinning van de huidige staatsgegevens toegang hebben, evenals een bevel uitgeven om de reserveprotocolstapel re-te initialiseren zodat de aan de gang zijnde dialoog kan hervatten.
