The present invention relates to racemic propylisopropyl acetic acid and propylisopropyl acetamide and their isomers in their racemic and stereospecific forms, for use in treatment of neurological and psychotic disorders, and affective disorders and to treat pain, headaches and migraines. The isomers are of the compound formula I: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a methyl or ethyl group; R.sub.2 is H, methyl or an ethyl group; R.sub.3 is ethyl or a propyl group; and R.sub.4 is a hydroxyl or amide group; and the total number of carbon atoms in said compound is 8, provided that when R1 is a methyl group and R4 is an amide group, R2 and R3 are not ethyl, further provided that when R1 is an ethyl and R4 a hydroxyl group, only stereoisomers of the compound are referred to. The present invention further relates to a method for the stereoselective synthesis of the 2S and 2R stereoisomer of PID and PIA. The present invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing as an active ingredient a racemic mixture or stereoisomers of the compounds of the general formula (I), which are useful for the treatment of neurological and psychotic disorders, and affective disorders and to treat pain, headaches and migraines.

De onderhavige uitvinding brengt met racemische propylisopropyl azijnzuur en propylisopropylacetamide en hun isomeren in hun racemische en stereospecific vormen, voor gebruik in behandeling van neurologische en psychotische wanorde, en affectieve wanorde en om pijn te behandelen, hoofdpijnen en migraines met elkaar in verband. De isomeren zijn van samenstellingsformule I: ## STR1 ## waarin R.sub.1 een methyl of ethylgroep is; R.sub.2 is H, methyl of een ethylgroep; R.sub.3 is ethyl of een propyl groep; en R.sub.4 is een hydroxyl of amidegroep; en het totale aantal koolstofatomen in bovengenoemde samenstelling is 8, op voorwaarde dat wanneer R1 een methylgroep is en R4 een amidegroep is, R2 en R3 is niet ethyl, verder op voorwaarde dat wanneer R1 een ethyl en R4 een hydroxylgroep is, slechts stereo-isomeren de samenstelling wordt verwezen naar. De onderhavige uitvinding heeft verder op een methode voor de stereoselective synthese van 2S betrekking en 2R stereo-isomeer van PID en PIA. De onderhavige uitvinding heeft ook op farmaceutische samenstellingen betrekking die als actief ingrediënt een racemisch mengsel of stereo-isomeren van de samenstellingen van de algemene formule (I) bevatten, die voor de behandeling van neurologische en psychotische wanorde, en affectieve wanorde en nuttig zijn om pijn, hoofdpijnen en migraines te behandelen.
