A zwitterionic polyamine comprising a linear or branched hydrophobic polyamine backbone having 2 to 10 tertiary amino nitrogen atoms and a spacer between two tertiary nitrogen atoms wherein the spacer is, for example selected from C.sub.8 -C.sub.16 -alkylene, C.sub.5 -C.sub.15 -cyloalkylene, wherein in formula (IV) R.dbd.C.sub.1 - to C.sub.22 -alkyl or C.sub.7 -C.sub.22 -aralkyl and n=3 to 6, at least one tertiary amine end group of the polyamine backbone contains two groups having formula (V) or (VI), wherein A means an ethylene oxide unit, a propylene oxide unit, a unit of butylene oxides and a tetrahydrofuran unit, n is a number of from 1 to 50, X is an anionic group such as --SO.sub.3 M, with the proviso that in formula (VI) one X may also be hydrogen and M is hydrogen, alkai metal or ammonium, or contains one group of formula (V) or (VI) and one group selected from radicals consisting of formula (VII), C.sub.1 - to C.sub.22 -alkyl and C.sub.7 -C.sub.22 -aralkyl the meaning of A and n is the same as in formula (V) or (VI), said zwitterionic polyetherpolyamine having a molecular weight up to 9000 and optionally containing up to 100% of the nitrogen atoms quaternize, and a process for the production of zwitterionic polyamines by alkoxylating said polyamines, introducing anionic groups into the alkoxylated polyamines and optionally quaternizing them before or after the introduction of anionic groups. The zwitterionic polyamines are used in detergents.

Zwitterionic polyamine bestaand uit een lineaire of vertakte hydrophobic polyamine backbone die 2 tot 10 tertiaire aminostikstofatomen en een verbindingsstuk tussen twee tertiaire stikstofatomen heeft waarin het verbindingsstuk is, bijvoorbeeld geselecteerd uit C.sub.8 - C.sub.16 - alkylene, C.sub.5 - C.sub.15 - cyloalkylene, waarin in formule (IV) R.dbd.C.sub.1 - aan C.sub.22 - alkyl of C.sub.7 - C.sub.22 - aralkyl en n=3 aan 6, minstens één groep van het tertiaire amineeind de polyamine backbone twee groepen bevatten die formule (V) of (VI) hebben, waarin A een eenheid van het ethyleenoxyde, een eenheid van het propyleenoxyde, een eenheid butyleenoxyden en een tetrahydrofuran eenheid betekent, is n een aantal van 1 tot 50, is X een anionische groep zoals -- SO.sub.3 M, op voorwaarde dat in formule (VI) één X ook waterstof kan zijn en M waterstof, alkaimetaal of ammonium, is of één groep formule (V) of (VI) bevat en - aan C.sub.22 - alkyl en C.sub.7 - C.sub.22 - aralkyl de betekenis van A en n het zelfde als in formule (V) of (VI) is, bevat quaternize bovengenoemde zwitterionic polyetherpolyamine die een moleculegewicht tot 9000 heeft en naar keuze tot 100% van de stikstofatomen, en een proces voor de productie van zwitterionic polyamines door bovengenoemde polyamines alkoxylating, introducerend anionische groepen in alkoxylated polyamines en naar keuze het quaternizing van hen vóór of na de introductie van anionische groepen. Zwitterionic polyamines worden gebruikt in detergentia.
