A method for treating cognitive impairments associated with aging or Alzheimer's disease which comprises treating a patient at risk for having the cognitive impairment with an effective amount of a highly selective butyrylcholinesterase inhibitor which is N.sup.8 -benzylnorcymserine, N.sup.1 -phenethylnorcymserine, N.sup.1, N.sup.8 -bisnorcymserine, N.sup.1 -N.sup.8 -bisbenzylnorphysostigmine, N.sup.1, N.sup.8 -bisbenzylnorphenserine, N.sup.1, N.sup.8 -bisbenzylnorcymserine, or pharmaceutical acceptable salts thereof.

Un metodo per trattare i danni conoscitivi si è associato con invecchiamento o la malattia del Alzheimer che contengono la cura del paziente al rischio per avere il danno conoscitivo con una quantità efficace di inibitore altamente selettivo di butyrylcholinesterase che è N.sup.8 - benzylnorcymserine, N.sup.1 - phenethylnorcymserine, N.sup.1, N.sup.8 - il bisnorcymserine, N.sup.1 - N.sup.8 - bisbenzylnorphysostigmine, N.sup.1, N.sup.8 - bisbenzylnorphenserine, N.sup.1, N.sup.8 - bisbenzylnorcymserine, o sali accettabili farmaceutici di ciò.
