An option module that may be installed in a computer system is provided.
The option module includes functional circuitry that is accessed by the
computer system through a conventional connector and/or bus. A nonvolatile
memory is also included on the option module and is used to store a
variety of system information, such as serial numbers. At least a portion
of this system information is protected from alteration by the computer
system. A second connector is also provided on the option module. An
external device when coupled to the second connector may access all of the
system data, and, if desired, alter it. Moreover, the option module need
not be installed in the computer system for the external device to access
the contents of the memory through the second connector.
Een optiemodule die in een computersysteem kan worden geïnstalleerd wordt verstrekt. De optiemodule omvat functioneel schakelschema dat door het computersysteem door een conventionele schakelaar en/of een bus wordt betreden. Een niet-vluchtig geheugen is ook inbegrepen op de optiemodule en gebruikt om een verscheidenheid van systeeminformatie, zoals serienummers op te slaan. Minstens wordt een gedeelte van deze systeeminformatie beschermd tegen wijziging door het computersysteem. Een tweede schakelaar wordt ook verstrekt op de optiemodule. Een extern apparaat wanneer gekoppeld aan de tweede schakelaar kan tot de elk van systeemgegevens toegang hebben, en, indien gewenst, verandert het. Voorts te hoeven de optiemodule niet in het computersysteem voor het externe apparaat worden geïnstalleerd om tot de inhoud van het geheugen door de tweede schakelaar toegang te hebben.
