Compounds of the formula (I):

in which X.sup.1 =H or F, X.sup.2 =H or F, and Y=Cl, Br or I, are prepared
by reacting, in a solvent or solvent mixture at a temperature below
-60.degree. C., a halobenzene of the formula (II) with an organic lithium
compound and then with a formyl equivalent of the formula (III):

and may be used as starting materials for preparing agrochemicals,
electronic materials and pharmaceuticals.
