A genome-modification technique based on homologous recombination was
established for partial modification of genomic sequences into desired
sequences. The use of such a technique to achieve high efficiency and
reproducibility in higher plants has been regarded as difficult.
According to the present invention, endogenous genome sequences of higher
plants can be targeted to efficiently and reproducibly yield homologous
recombinants without changing their original loci. Moreover, the present
invention enables the production of a transformed plant in which a
specific gene is modified without any restrictions, and it can also
contribute to the analysis of gene functions as well as to the analysis
of gene expression mechanisms associated with changes in genome dynamics.
