A method for automatically generating a network topology for a directory service
is provided, wherein the topology represents network sites and site links in a
distributed computing environment. An implementation of the technique generates
a replication topology used for populating the directory service. The topology
is generated based on router interface information obtained from router configuration
files. A site reference is generated by identifying a sub-network on a Local Area
Network interface, and a site link reference is generated by identifying a Wide
Area Network interface.
