An image reading apparatus includes a light transmitting member opposed to an
original, a reading device for reading the original image through the light transmitting
member, and a standard portion which is read by the reading device to perform shading
compensation, wherein the standard portion is provided on the opposite side of
the original with respect to the light transmitting member.
