A planar lightwave circuit is provided that includes a substrate and at least
one
boundary positioned in the substrate and defining a cavity. The boundary is substantially
non-transmissive and absorbing for wavelengths of stray light present in the vicinity
of the boundary. The boundary possesses substantial symmetry under at least one
symmetry group operation.
