An electrophoretic display includes a first substrate and a second substrate disposed opposite to the first substrate, insulating liquid disposed between the first and second substrates, electrophoretic particles dispersed in the insulating liquid, a partition wall disposed at a position defining a pixel between the first and second substrates, and a first electrode and a second electrode, which are disposed on one of the first and second substrates, for applying an electric field to said electrophoretic particles. The first electrode is disposed in a scattering layer having a thickness of 1-100 m and has an areal proportion of 0.1-80% per an area of the pixel. The second electrode constitutes a part of the partition wall.
