A matrix-type organic electro-luminescent display (OELD) having triode organic
EL device is provided. The first electrode that may be an anode or cathode is formed
on the substrate. After a patterned electrically insulating layer is formed on
the substrate and the first electrode, the second electrode for controlling the
potential of the anode or the cathode is formed on the insulating layer so that
the first electrode and the second electrode are formed at a different plane. And
then an organic EL layer and third electrode (cathode or anode) are sequentially
formed on the substrate. The organic EL layer is electrically connected to the
first and the third electrodes in the emission part of the OELD, while the organic
EL layer is electrically connected to the second electrodes in the non-emission
part of the OELD for controlling potential between the anode and an organic EL
layer or the cathode and the organic EL layer. Accordingly it is possible to realize
matrix-type display having triode organic EL device showing high brightness with
low power consumption.
