There is disclosed an image processing apparatus for performing a dynamic range
compression processing to an arbitrary image to add a high frequency component
obtained based on the image, the image processing apparatus comprising: conversion
means for converting the magnitude of the amplitude of the added high frequency
component based on the magnitude of the high frequency component. When the dynamic
range compression processing is performed, artifacts such as an overshoot and undershoot
are depressed, the amplitude of the high frequency component is held and the width
of an image density distribution is set to be freely adjustable, so that a satisfactory
processed image can be obtained.
