A catalyst suitable for use in a fuel cell, especially as an anode catalyst,
that
contains platinum at a concentration that is between about 20 and about 60 atomic
percent, ruthenium at a concentration that is between about 20 and about 60 atomic
percent, palladium at a concentration that is between about 5 and about 45 atomic
percent, and having an atomic ratio of platinum to ruthenium that is between about
0.7 and about 1.2. Alternatively, the catalyst may contain platinum at a concentration
that is between about 25 and about 50 atomic percent, ruthenium at a concentration
that is between about 25 and about 55 atomic percent, palladium at a concentration
that is between about 5 and about 45 atomic percent, and having a difference between
the concentrations of ruthenium and platinum that is no greater than about 20 atomic percent.
