The communications unit comprises: a receiver to receive a message originating from an information source for distribution to one or more target communications units; a controller coupled to a memory to store the information in the memory; and a transmitter having short range communications capabilities to transmit the information to individual communications units to facilitate distribution to the one or more target communications units on an opportunistic basis.
