The invention provides methods and materials related to inhibiting the effects of A.beta. such as neuronal cell death and tau phosphorylation. For example, the invention provides polypeptides, compositions containing polypeptides, transgenic animals, and methods for preventing an A.beta. effect (e.g., neuronal cell death in a mammal).
