The invention prevents a connection failure arising from an ingress of a
conductive material, such as a solder ball, into a cholesteric liquid
crystal layer in a liquid crystal display device having the cholesteric
liquid crystal layer on a substrate when an electronic component is
mounted to be connected to a conductor arranged on the substrate having
the cholesteric liquid crystal layer thereon. A liquid crystal display
device includes a liquid crystal cell having a liquid crystal layer
between an upper substrate and a lower substrate bonded to each other
with a sealing member interposed therebetween. First conductors are
arranged on the inner surface of the lower substrate and second
conductors are arranged on the inner surface of the upper substrate. A
transflective layer containing a cholesteric liquid crystal layer is
arranged between the lower substrate and the first conductors. Electronic
components are mounted on the inner surface of the upper substrate
outside the sealing member. The electronic components are electrically
connected to the second conductors and are electrically connected to the
first conductors through inter-substrate conductors.
