The invention provides NO- or NO.sup.--releasing imidate; and thioimidate, diazeniumdiolates, in which the N.sub.2O.sub.2.sup.- functional group is bonded to a carbon atom. The imidate and thioimidate diazeniumdiolates are bound to a polymer or a substrate.
